How much is car insurance in Massachusetts in 2026?

Car insurance in Massachusetts costs an average of $68 per month for minimum coverage and $174 per month for full coverage. Dense urban traffic, high repair and medical costs, and the state's rich required coverage package all feed into the price.

"Full coverage" isn't a standardized policy type. It generally means adding collision and comprehensive, which pay for damage to your own vehicle, on top of the compulsory coverages. In Massachusetts, those deductibles default to $500 unless you choose otherwise.²

Your individual rate depends on your driving experience, record, mileage, vehicle, and garaging location. Luva shows quotes matched to your profile, not the statewide average.

What is the minimum car insurance required in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts requires four compulsory coverages, and the minimums rose for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025.²

Coverage typeMinimum limitWhat it covers

Bodily injury to others

$25,000 / $50,000

Injuries you cause to others in a Massachusetts accident (excludes your own passengers)

Personal injury protection (PIP)

$8,000

Medical expenses, up to 75% of lost wages, and replacement services for you, your passengers, and pedestrians — regardless of fault

Bodily injury caused by uninsured auto

$25,000 / $50,000

Your injuries when the at-fault driver is uninsured or unidentified (hit-and-run)

Damage to someone else's property

$30,000

Damage to another party's vehicle or property in an accident you cause

Even with the 2025 increases, the compulsory limits aren't generous. The compulsory bodily injury coverage also only applies to accidents in Massachusetts and doesn't cover your own passengers.

Most drivers add optional bodily injury coverage that raises limits and extends protection out of state, along with underinsured motorist coverage and, if the car warrants it, collision and comprehensive.²

How does Massachusetts no-fault insurance and PIP coverage work?

Massachusetts is a no-fault state, meaning your own PIP coverage pays your initial medical bills and lost wages after a crash, no matter who caused it. PIP covers you, anyone you let drive your car, household members, passengers, and pedestrians, up to $8,000 per person.²

No-fault doesn't mean fault never matters. The at-fault driver's insurer still pays for vehicle damage, and injured people can sue outside the no-fault system when injuries are serious, or costs cross the state's tort threshold.³ A driver found more than 50% at fault receives an at-fault determination that can raise their premium under merit rating rules.²

How do regional and national carriers differ, and when is it worth getting quotes from both?

Neither regional nor national carriers are inherently better; pricing, underwriting appetite, coverage options, service models, and claims operations can differ substantially. Comparing both can provide a broader view of the available combinations of price, coverage, and service.

Price is only part of the decision, as coverage options and claims service matter too. Getting quotes through Luva makes it easy to compare regional and national carriers with your details in one place.

What factors affect car insurance rates in Massachusetts?

Because Massachusetts bans so many common rating factors, your premium comes down largely to things you control: years of driving experience, your record of accidents and violations, annual mileage, your vehicle, and where the car is garaged.

Insurers apply Merit Rating Plans approved by the state: years of incident-free driving lower your premium, while at-fault accidents and violations raise it. By law, an incident older than six years can't be used against you, and no incident can raise your premium for more than five years.²

How do violations affect Massachusetts car insurance rates?

A clean driving record is the most reliable path to lower rates in Massachusetts. Tickets, at-fault accidents, and major offenses like OUI (Massachusetts' term for DUI) can trigger merit-rating surcharges, as the table below shows.

Note: Figures are based on estimated rate data from Quadrant Information Services. Actual premiums will depend on your specific driver profile.

The state's Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP) assigns points by severity:

  • Two for a minor violation

  • Three for a minor at-fault accident

  • Four for a major accident

  • Five for a major violation like OUI

Insurers may use their own state-approved merit rating plans instead.⁴

If you believe an at-fault determination is wrong, Massachusetts gives you a formal appeal path: you can contest it before the state Board of Appeals within 30 days for a $50 fee, and you're refunded any extra premium if you win.⁵

Why do the safest drivers in the U.S. still pay this much?

Luva's research ranks Massachusetts among the safest-driving states, with the lowest crash fatality rates in the country: 0.56 per 100 million miles and 4.9 per 100,000 residents.¹

Safe drivers don't automatically mean cheap insurance, though. Premiums track repair costs, medical costs, traffic density, and the required coverage package, not just driver behavior.

What rating factors are banned in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts prohibits rating factors that most states permit, and credit information is barred outright.²

Driving record and merit rating

Insurers may consider where your car is garaged when setting your rate, but can't use it to refuse you coverage. In Massachusetts, your driving record and experience carry substantial pricing weight, so more of your price is within your control.

How can you find cheap car insurance in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts has a competitive marketplace, and comparing quotes pays off. These steps can also lower your costs:

  1. Shop and compare quotes. Rates for identical coverage vary meaningfully between carriers. Luva puts those quotes in one view so comparison takes minutes.

  2. Protect your merit rating. Incident-free years directly lower your premium under state merit rating rules, and appealing an incorrect at-fault determination can pay for itself many times over.

  3. Bundle your policies. Insuring your auto and home, condo, or renters policies with the same carrier typically earns a multi-policy discount.

  4. Ask about group discounts. Many Massachusetts insurers offer approved group rates through employers, unions, and associations, and membership alone can qualify you.

  5. Raise your deductibles. Collision and comprehensive default to $500; choosing a higher deductible lowers your premium if you can comfortably cover it after a loss.

  6. Review optional coverages annually. Medical payments coverage may be redundant with solid health insurance, and collision may no longer earn its premium on a low-value car.
