Is State Farm Car Insurance Good? Reviews and Expert Insights
State Farm may be a good choice for drivers who prefer working with a dedicated local agent. Rates are generally competitive, typically running below the overall industry average, though pricing can vary by state.
The company is also notably forgiving of a single speeding ticket or at-fault accident compared to other carriers, making it worth considering for drivers with a past mark on their record.
How much does State Farm car insurance cost?
State Farm charges an average of $2,007 a year for full coverage, or $167 a month. Your rate will depend on many factors, including your location, driving record, credit tier, age, sex, vehicle, selected coverages and annual mileage.
How does your driving record affect State Farm premiums?
State Farm is among the most tolerant of drivers with a minor ding or two on their driving records. Here’s a look at how State Farm compares to national insurers:

How can you lower your premium following an accident?
Enrolling in a telematics program, raising deductibles on your policies, and shopping around are effective ways to manage your rate after an accident. Telematics allows you to have more control of your rate and tells you what to do to improve it. Savings depend on the program and your driving. Raising your deductibles will generally give you an immediate decrease in premium, though you’ll pay more out of pocket if you file a claim.

How does your credit score affect State Farm premiums?
Like most carriers, State Farm charges a higher premium for drivers with low credit scores in states that allow it. State Farm applies significant rate increases based on credit tier, with drivers with credit scores below 580 paying roughly six times as much as those with scores of 750 or higher.
That said, credit scores do not affect pricing in four states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Michigan. Michigan bars insurers from using credit information to deny, cancel or non-renew a policy at all, and permits it only for deciding which premium installment options to offer.³
How does State Farm price drivers by age?
State Farm is especially competitive for new and younger drivers. Across age groups, State Farm’s annual premium for 16-year-old drivers came in roughly 37% below the overall industry average.
What does State Farm car insurance cover?
State Farm sells the standard personal auto coverages, plus a short list of optional add-ons and endorsements.⁴ Available coverages include:
Liability: Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to other people, up to your policy limits.
Collision: Pays to repair or replace your car after it hits another vehicle or an object, or overturns.
Comprehensive: Pays for damage from something other than a collision, including theft, fire, vandalism, or animal collisions. Does not include the value of personal effects stolen or damaged in your car (these may fall under your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance off-premises provisions).
Uninsured and underinsured motorist: Covers medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages when a driver with too little insurance or no insurance at all injures you. In some states it also covers property damage.
Medical payments: Pays medical and/or funeral expenses for you and your passengers after a crash.
Emergency road service: Pays for specified roadside assistance such as towing, fuel delivery, and roadside tire change services.
Car rental and travel expenses: Reimburses rental car costs while yours is being repaired after a covered loss. It also helps pay for meals, lodging, and transportation if the accident happens more than 50 miles from home.⁵
Rideshare driver coverage: Fills gaps between your personal policy and the rideshare company’s policy. It extends selected coverages from your State Farm auto policy while you are logged into the rideshare app, at the same limits and deductibles you already carry.⁶
Coverage names and availability vary by state, so the options and terms used on your policy may be different from this list.
What State Farm does not offer
Accident forgiveness: State Farm doesn’t sell an accident-forgiveness endorsement. It does offer accident-free and good-driver discounts in many states, but those discounts won’t stop the company from increasing your premium after a single accident.⁷
Mechanical breakdown insurance. State Farm doesn’t sell its own mechanical breakdown insurance. This type of coverage can help pay for certain mechanical or electrical failures that are not caused by a collision, although maintenance and ordinary wear and tear are generally excluded.
GAP insurance: State Farm doesn’t offer GAP insurance, which pays the difference between what you still owe on a car loan and the vehicle’s actual cash value if the car is totaled or stolen. However, vehicles financed with a qualifying loan from State Farm Bank may be eligible for a non-insurance provision called Payoff Protector.⁸

Does an agent model help save customers money or hassle?
Saving money isn't always about having an agent or not. In fact, there are times where carriers with no agents cost more than having an agent, and vice versa. The agent model is really about not being alone when it comes to your insurance. If you want to pay similar premiums with someone familiar to lean on when you need help, the agent model is a great option.

What discounts does State Farm offer?
State Farm offers a variety of discounts. Here’s a look at each and their potential savings:
Is State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save worth it?
Drive Safe & Save may be worth it for eligible drivers who are comfortable sharing telematics data.
In most states, State Farm gives you a 10% discount just for signing up and completing setup.
Here’s how it works:
You install the State Farm app and pair it with a Bluetooth beacon that mounts in the car.
The app gives feedback on acceleration, braking, cornering, phone distraction, speeding and mileage.
Once installed, your ongoing discount can reach 30% or more, depending on how much and how well you drive.
State Farm notes that not everything the app shows you affects the discount. Participation costs nothing.
State Farm recalculates your discount at each renewal, typically every six months, using up to the prior 12 months of driving data.
According to the company, you will not receive a surcharge due to data in the program. But your driving metrics could result in some discounts getting reduced upon your next renewal. For example, if you already receive a discount for driving under 7,500 miles a year, and the program shows you driving more, your low-mileage discount may get revoked at renewal.
Drive Safe & Save is not available in California, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island. Antique and classic cars, motorcycles, RVs, and golf carts are not eligible.¹¹
How does State Farm compare to competitors?
While pricing is important, it’s only part of the equation. Insurance companies also differ widely when it comes to overall customer satisfaction, frequency and severity of complaints, and the satisfaction of drivers who have had to file claims with the company.
Notably, according to J.D. Power’s 2025 claims satisfaction report. State Farm had the highest claims satisfaction among the carriers we compared.⁹
