What Is Proof of Insurance, and How Do You Get It?

Last Updated: October 29, 2026

Proof of insurance is a document or digital record from your insurance company that shows you have a policy with the minimum car insurance limits to legally drive in your state.

You may need to show proof of car insurance for legal reasons or if you take ownership of a vehicle.

Your insurance company or agent will provide proof of insurance after you purchase and pay for your policy and every time you renew it.

What counts as proof of insurance?

Insurance companies provide you with proof of insurance when you buy your policy. If you choose to renew your policy, you’ll receive new ID cards with the effective renewal dates.

Your car insurance card lists all the important information about your insurance policy, such as:

  • Policyholder’s name

  • Effective dates of the policy

  • Insurance company name and policy number

  • Year, make, model, and VIN of the cars listed on the policy

  • Information about how to file a claim and what to do if you’re involved in an accident

Depending on your state, valid proof of car insurance can be:

  • A physical insurance ID card

  • Insurance declaration page

  • Electronic proof via mobile app or PDF (where permitted)

  • Copy of the insurance policy

The Insurance Information Institute (III) recommends keeping critical, relevant documents, including your registration and proof of auto insurance, in your car.¹

How do you get proof of insurance?

Insurance companies typically provide multiple ways for you to access your car insurance policy, regardless of the reason you need it. You can usually get it fast, sometimes within minutes.

If you already have insurance:

Drivers commonly put a copy of their auto insurance card in their wallet or glove compartment, so check there first.

If you don’t have a paper copy handy, you can usually get a copy of your proof of insurance in one of the following ways:

  • Logging in to your insurance company’s mobile app

  • Downloading a PDF from your email

  • Calling customer service or your agent

If you’re not in a hurry, you can ask a customer service representative or your agent to mail you a physical auto ID card.

If you don’t have insurance yet:

It’s fairly easy to get an insurance policy so you can show proof of insurance when needed. The following steps outline what you need to do from start to finish:

  1. Shop around: Get multiple quotes online.

  2. Compare policies: Adjust the coverages and deductibles to make an apples-to-apples comparison.

  3. Purchase a policy: Complete the application, sign it, and make a payment.

  4. Obtain an insurance ID card via email or an app: Get proof of auto insurance as noted in the previous section.

Luva lets you compare quotes from several carriers in one place, so you can get covered fast. Once your policy is active, your insurer provides proof of insurance right away, often within minutes.

What should you do if you need proof of insurance before your documents arrive?

Your insurer can usually email you a digital copy of your ID card so you don’t have to wait for the mailed copies. If you’re in a traffic stop and only have an old ID card, officers can often verify coverage through the state’s database as long as the policy is still active.

Expert insight

Proof of insurance after an accident

Don’t take an insurance card as fact. If possible, before you leave the scene, call the insurance company listed on the card and confirm the policy is still active. We hear from clients all the time who saw the other driver’s card, assumed they were covered, and then found out, when they tried to file a claim, that the policy had lapsed or the card wasn’t real. I tell every client to start the claim process right at the scene.

What happens if you can’t show proof of insurance?

Keeping proof of car insurance handy can help you avoid unnecessary complications. But good intentions aside, you may not be able to present proof of insurance when you need to.

Here’s what can happen if you can’t provide car insurance proof when it’s required:

  • Traffic citation, court appearance, and fines

  • License and registration revocation

  • Vehicle impoundment

  • Increased insurance costs

  • Future requirement of financial responsibility

By understanding what counts as proof of insurance, when you'll need to show it, and the consequences of not having it, you can stay properly insured.

Brett Bortz is the owner of Inscendo Insurance, a property and casualty agency serving individuals, families, and businesses across Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Kansas, and Nebraska. With over 11 years in the insurance industry, he has built Inscendo around a simple belief: insurance should be easy to understand, fairly priced, and backed by people who show up when it matters most. Inscendo is a Farmers Insurance agency with access to a broad network of additional carriers. Brett and his team compare options side by side rather than fitting every client into a single company's product. A young driver buying a first policy, a family protecting their home through hail and storm season, a coastal homeowner who needs wind and flood coverage, a small business owner looking for the right protection: the goal is the same for each. Find coverage that truly fits, at a price that makes sense. Brett leads a team of licensed agents and is closely involved in how the agency runs day-to-day, from how coverage is explained to how quickly questions are answered. He holds his team to a clear standard. Every client should understand what they are buying, why it's recommended, and what to expect if they ever need to file a claim. He also stays close to the details, reviewing results and refining how the agency operates so it keeps improving as it grows. Under Brett's leadership, Inscendo has grown quickly and expanded into new states, but its personal approach hasn't changed. Clients can expect honest advice, regular coverage reviews, and a team that gives every question the same care, whether they're insuring one car or a household with several policies. Inscendo writes auto, home, renters, flood, umbrella, motorcycle, RV, and other specialty coverage, as well as business and life insurance. Brett Bortz is a licensed independent insurance agent.
